- IDE/EIDE only allow a very short connecting cable (maybe two feet? maybe
- not even that), and two or four devices. AFAIK, these devices can be
- hard drives or CD-ROMs.
-
- SCSI allows a minimum of 3 meters for Fast SCSI-2 devices (6 meters for
- plain SCSI-2), and allows up to eight devices (including the controller;
- variations and using LUNs permit more). There is a far larger variety of
- SCSI devices: in addition to hard drives and CD-ROMs, there are scanners,
- tape drives, and all sorts of weird SCSI-to-whatever adapters.
-
- About this time somebody starts saying that EIDE is faster. I've lost
- track of the top theoretical performance of SCSI and EIDE, but it doesn't
- matter much to me, because both are far faster than most of the fastest
- devices out there. It doesn't matter if your interface can theoretically
- transfer 20M/sec if your drive can only do 5M/sec.
-
- In fairness, it is generally a bit cheaper to obtain an EIDE drive than
- the SCSI version of the same drive, and for some systems (particularly PC
- clones, most of which have the IDE controller built in), it can be the
- simplest way to attach a disk device.
